In thinking about how to compile and organize such a cabaret, I couldn’t help but think of putting a show together that included several art forms, from music and theater to poetry and dance. And what does each art form have in common: the power of storytelling; the narrative. When I came to Maine in ‘85 for graduate school, I was Introduced to professors who were studying the connection between the narrative and human communication. Why was storytelling so profoundly essential to our experience as transactional beings? One “take away” was that storytelling helps us rise above the mundane as well as adversity by propelling us into other imaginative worlds.

What better way to propel an audience into their imaginary world than to tell stories about love...not just love for others: family, friends, & beloveds, but also love of place. This thing we call love is certainly something we can all relate to. And how we experience such a beautiful expression of human interaction, be it amazing, messy, patient, memorable, or hopeful, there’s always a story to tell. In Love Is: A Cabaret, you will hear love’s many narrated iterations through poetry, song, theater, and dance. I invite you to put your cares away, step into these stories about love, and open up the escape hatch of your imagination. I hope one of your “take aways” from this show is that you will continue to live in the “holy mystery of love,” (Silvester Beaman), to remain openhearted, a potentiality that’s available to all of us in each moment of time.

And a final thank you to fellow concept creators, Jocelyn Handy and Kelly Walton, the folks from the communities of 317 Main Community Music Center and Royal River Community Players who helped make this happen, and to such an outstandingly talented and experienced cast!! Break a leg!!
